“We are a bit afraid of what we witness every day” – interview with Black Mirrors

Well, I think Black Mirrors is one of the most exciting alternative rock bands in the underground scene! I consider us lucky that we were able to see them live as a support act of The Night Flight Orchestra. And now it’s our time to introduce them!

“Pierre and I created Black Mirrors in 2013” – stated that by Marcella Di Troia, the voice of Black Mirrors. “At first, I wanted to make a girl band and started to play with two friends of mine, one on drums and the other one at the bass. We were looking for a guitar player. I had known Pierre from another band and I really liked the way he played, so we asked him to join the band.

After some jam sessions together, Pierre and I wanted to make this Black Mirrors more concrete, we wanted to start to play in front of an audience.

But my girlfriends didn’t have the same aspiration. So, we continued the band with two other friends of ours, Edouard and Gino. We had a lot of line-up changes. Now, we are playing with Loïc, our new bass player for 9 months and at the drums, Paul has joined us 6 months ago. It took us 5 years to get our final line-up and we are more than happy, we’re feeling that we have our own tribe now with them in the band, so strong!

The name of our band is after the English TV show ‘Black Mirror‘. If you don’t know it, the series is about how new technologies can interfere in our daily life. It became the name of our tribe that tries to resist this invasion. Even if we have to play the game by using it, because a band doesn’t exist without social media anymore, but we are a bit afraid of what we witness every day.

Musically we are inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Queens Of The Stone Age, Nirvana, Kyuss, and The Doors.

Lyrics-wise, I write about our daily life, about my spiritual achievement.

We also have a song called ‘Burning Warriors’ that talks about one of the biggest slaughter of the Native American. It happened in 1890 in Wounded Knee where more than 300 Lakota were killed by the US Army.

Most of the time Pierre has a first basic idea, a riff. I work on the melody. After that, he can spend hours working on and on until he gets something almost complete. Then, we work on the song together with our drummer Paul and our bass player Loïc. But basically, Pierre and I are working on the core of the song.”

“Being a good musician has nothing to do with being a good songwriter” – replied the guitarist, Pierre when we asked them about their working process. “It helps in a way but it’s not everything. I mean to have a lot of tools in your toolbox doesn’t mean you’re a good handyman. To write a song is about emotion not about technical skills or anything. You have to be able to talk with your emotion to the emotion of the audience, and being a good musician is not the first point.

If we think about Kurt Cobain, he was one of the best rock songwriters of the last thirty years, but he’s not an incredible guitar player, on the other hand he was able to create these incredible songs out of nothing because it was pure, raw and wild.”

Marcella is actually really into the Native American culture which also inspires her when she creates a stage look. “I love to read about Native American culture. I even sometimes listen to Native American music, chanting, pow wow songs from different Native American Nations. It inspires me a lot in my daily life and in my lyrics. I think I need this to remind me that we are all bound to each other, that we have to respect our Mother Earth and all the living beings.

I make everything myself. I love to craft and to sew my own stage clothes. In a certain point, I need to work with my hands as well, it’s like a meditation for me. And it’s cheaper!” (laughs)

In closing, Pierre shared a funny story: “It was one of the last night of our tour with The Vintage Caravan and Wucan, we’re in Porto which is a really beautiful city. We’re enjoying a bunch of beer with people of the other bands, talking about life, making jokes, remembering memories of the tour and so on… We were near the river in front of an incredible bridge and castle with beautiful lights. This kind of rare poetic and a human moment that is always good to enjoy in life. And then suddenly we heard hundred of seagulls screams, like a lot, really! They were flying above us and we started to hear some strange noises. At some point, we understood that this army of seagulls was shiting on us and then it’s was like a war scene of a movie. Everyone started to run to espace this shelling. We finally found some shelter under the roof of a terrace. Hopefully, no one was hurt!”
