“We are a band that always rises above expectations” – Introducing Nelosolut

Nelosolut interview

Finnish rock ‘n’ roll troublemakers Nelosolut are a band that thrives on big riffs, real-life stories, and a fearless attitude that keeps their music fresh and unpredictable. Blending elements of classic rock, grunge, and modern alternative, they’ve built a reputation for energetic live shows and a sound that resonates with fans of all ages. Their latest single, Kolmas sääntö, has already been dubbed the defining track of their upcoming album, Paha maailma, proving once again that they’re here to shake things up. In this interview, Timi Pettersson (vocals), Daniel Kuhmonen (rhythm guitar), Lukas Kuhmonen (lead guitar), Lassi Huittinen (drums), and Sami Perttunen (bass) share the story behind their name, how Foo Fighters unintentionally influenced their latest track, and why a little bit of chaos (and maybe a rough morning after) helped shape their new music.

About the band

Lukas: The first thing people should know about Nelosolut is that we are a band that always rises above expectations and we are a perfect fit for someone who wants to listen great life-stories combined with a good old-fashioned rock n’ roll attitude.

We combine traits from old-school music (80’s hair metal, 90’s grunge, etc.) with modern sounds of the present that make our music connectable with a diverse group of people. It doesn’t matter whether you are a teenager, adult, or senior citizen you can always enjoy our shows and music. – Sami

Behind the name

Daniel: The name ”Nelosolut” was supposed to be a temporary name for us for our first gig because we couldn’t figure out a name in time and it was the only thing that came up to our minds, but after the first show people gave a lot of positive feedback about the name and after a while it kind of stuck with us so we decided to keep it instead of coming up with a new band name and now we wouldn’t change it for the world!

About “Kolmas sääntö

Timi: The song felt quite immediately that it was going to be the defining song for the album. Already in our first demo session when we started to work on it, everyone in our band (and our producer Joel Lindfors as well) got super excited about the song right away and it just kept developing during the process so it was quite easy to figure it out that this song was going to be the gem of this album. Of course, we still do feel like every song in the album is magnificent but this one especially holds a special place in our hearts.

The influence came up quite subconsciously, we only figured it out when we were trying to come up with the singing melody to the chorus that this sounds quite a lot like Foo fighters. So we didn’t concsiously make a decision to do a foo fighters-themed song, it just came to us quite naturally following our influences and ideas for the song. – Daniel

About the upcoming album

Lassi: The classic cliche ”we are not defined by one genre” can be used in our case as well in some way, but you still can hear the certain Nelosolut rock element in each of the songs in the album, whether it is a pop-influenced chorus by Timi, progressive guitar part from Daniel or heavy-hitting drum part. We all have several different influences when it comes to music so it is quite impossible to create one specific recipe for our songs, so, yes the songs vary and experiment with different styles but they all do have in some ways our signature style that people can recognize.

There were a few momets that weren’t exactly planned while recording the album. For example, the solo of the song ”pienestä pitäen” came about through a few funny episodes. Firstly, the pick was hand-made so the Eddie Van Halen-influenced part came all in pinch (the part came up accidentally also). Also, the crispy sound of the singing in the chorus of ”Kolmas sääntö” was due to Timi’s heavy night out the day before and feeling a bit unwell during the recording. – Sami

Lukas: The most surprising song will be definitely the final track of the album ”Mustaa ja purppuraa”. The overall sound of the song is the most progressive and heavy we have come up with so far. Timi’s brother Samu Pettersson came up with the demo of the song and we worked on it, gave it our own composing factors, and came up with a song that is going to surprise a lot of our fans who know us more from our pop-influenced songs.

About the fans and their influence

Lassi: When it comes to composing, not particularly, maybe in the beginning there was some desire to compose our songs in English but we noticed that the songs that were in Finnish, resonated more in the audience so we kind of steered into that direction. But genre- and melody-wise we have always done songs that we want to do and don’t think too excessively about what the audience’s influence might be when it comes to composing our songs. Of course, everybody wants to make a hit song and we do as well, but we don’t want the hit-chasing to guide our way too much. Performances, on the other hand, are made for the fans. We want to give them the best experience as possible and we always think through our setlist and customize it before every show in order to get the best out of us for the audience and for them to get the best experience as possible!

About the future

Timi: Next up, we have a band competition Emergenza (February 8th) where we try to reach the second round on our way to victory! After that, we start to do shows to promote our album, starting up in Jyväskylä’s famous bar FreeTime which is also our 5-year anniversary show (28th of February)! So, the short-term goal is to just perform as much as we can and to share our songs to as many people as possible. In the long term, our goal is to sign a recording- and touring contract to get us to the next level and increase our fan base.
