“The inner enemy that everybody has” – interview with Enemy Inside

I scrolled down my Instagram feed and somehow I discovered a band that I’ve never seen or heard before – well, I checked them on YouTube and I instantly became a fan of them! Enemy Inside was formed in 2017 in Germany by the vocalistNastassja Giulia, and the guitarist, Evan K – and it’s time to dive into their music and story!

How it all began? Well, Nastassja told us about the most significant milestones of the beginnings. “Evan and I met in Mannheim, in 2013, where we both studied music. We got along very well and started writing songs together and we quickly noticed that we are a great team! As the university we went to was more of a pop-based university, it was difficult to form a band and finding people who were really into rock and metal. So we were an ‘army of two’ for a really long time. What started out as a project, finally became a band when we moved to my hometown Aschaffenburg in 2017 and found the other band members.

“At the moment I design my stage clothes and almost all stage clothes of the boys, by myself. I love getting creative besides music!”Nastassja

It took a really long time till we found a band name that we really liked and could identify with. A lot of our songs were actually finished before we had a band name.

Someday Evan came up to me and suggested ‘Enemy Inside’ and I instantly loved it!
Because a lot of our songs included this topic, about this inner enemy that everybody has, everything started to make sense.

What really helps our process and makes it faster is that we’re always working very goal-oriented. We are five individuals and everybody has – and should have – his own opinion, so yes from every now and then there can occur some differences. But we’re definitely going in the same direction, meaning we are all standing behind our music and everything we do a 100%.

As I mentioned before Evan and I already started writing songs together during our studies, so the songs of our first album were already written before we met the rest of the band. So till now Evan and I were responsible for the songwriting. That doesn’t mean that it will always be like this, but I also think it can be easier to write songs in a smaller group.”

“I’m not always aware of what inspires me. I think it’s more of a subliminal process. It can be a place that gives you a certain emotion, a sentence you read or hear, a movie or the people you meet. Most of the time we first realize what has inspired us when we finish a song or much later.”Nastassja

If you check their Facebook page you can find the following (and very interesting introduction, btw): “Sometimes we need to forget the past and start over. Like a Phoenix, we will rise from the flames.” Well, it may not be a surprise after all that their debut album called “PHOENIX“. “I think I can speak for everyone of the band that Enemy Inside and our debut album ‘Phoenix’ represents a new chapter in all our lives” – Nastassja added. “A lot of changes happened during the evolution of ‘Phoenix’. For me, it was a chapter that was scary and exciting at the same time.

It was the first time I had the guts to present my own music to others. I’m very self-critical and I always thought everything I did was not good enough and this was the first time I really felt that this is where I belong.

When we started writing songs for the album, I also came out of a really bad relationship. This is also what the title track ‘Phoenix’ is about. So yes, I think the ‘Phoenix’ who rises from the ashes really describes all that.”
