Stay Weird – Introducing: The Funeral Portrait

The Funeral Portrait

The Funeral Portrait isn’t tiptoeing into summer this year, they’re kicking down the door in full glam-goth glory. With their fierce new single “Skinny Lies out now and a star-studded deluxe edition of “Greetings From Suffocate City” dropped on June 13, the emo rockers from Atlanta are making it clear: this isn’t a phase — it’s a full-blown takeover. We caught up with guitarist Caleb Freihaut for a peek behind the scenes.

The new, deluxe edition of “Greetings From Suffocate City” is loaded with collabs. Do you write the songs first and slide into the DMs later, or the other way around?

Caleb: In almost all the cases on this album, we would end up with tracks & be like “This person would be perfect for this!” Then reach out! We’ve been lucky to land so many awesome collabs.

This album is massive. 24 tracks, legends, zero chill. Flex or accident?

Caleb: On the deluxe, we wanted to showcase some new songs (Skinny Lies, Evergreen), a few older demos and cut tracks, plus all of our records with this wide range of features and styles.

Is ‘Stay Weird’ a band motto or just solid life advice?

Caleb: We will always stand for people being themselves and coming to our shows knowing 100% they can come as they are.

“Stay Weird” is an anthem for all of our fans to grab onto.

Touring with The Rasmus… Any cultural exchange or just chasing shadows?

Caleb: We love them! They are all super sweet and friendly people. We hang out and talk a good bit, sharing experiences and differences. We get to tour Europe with them again in November!

Any expectations from the crowd in the Old Continent?

Caleb: We are all ecstatic for the experience! We’re hoping our unique stage look and presence will really click with a continent that appreciates theatrical acts!

If “The Funeral Portrait” were a horror movie, who dies first, who’s the final survivor, and who’s the secret villain?

Caleb: I die first, Homer is the final survivor, Lee is the secret villain.

Plotting the next era or just catching your breath?

Caleb: A little bit of everything! We are in the infancy of pre-pro for the next record, a few demos and ideas floating around. Not quite onto visuals yet, but also yes juggling all of the insanity of touring 290 days this year!

Sum up emo 2025!

Caleb: It means standing up for what you believe in and being yourself, the same as it meant in 2005! The ethos of the community never changes, even as sounds and aesthetics might.

Get weird. Get loud. Suffocate City is calling!
